When Northern Virginia’s Appliances Break: A Month-by-Month Repair Calendar

Every repair company knows the phones get busier at certain times of year. We wanted to know exactly when, appliance by appliance, for the counties we serve. So we read a full year of Google searches for repair in Northern Virginia and turned them into an appliance repair calendar.

How we built the appliance repair calendar

We pulled the monthly Google search volume for 888 repair searches from September 2025 to August 2026. They cover Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun, Arlington and Fauquier counties and the city of Alexandria. Then we grouped them into 13 appliance and system families, such as “furnace repair near me” and “Bosch dishwasher repair”.

Some families get far more searches than others, so we compared each month with that family’s own yearly average. +50% means that month had 50% more repair searches than usual for that appliance. The full method and its limits are at the end.

Heating: October starts it, January peaks

Heating systems swing more than anything else in the house. Heat pump repair searches were 66% below average in September and 162% above it in January. Furnace searches went from 70% below average in May to 93% above in January.

The climb starts early. Furnace searches were already 42% above average in October, the month most homes turn the heat on for the first time. Problems that sat hidden all summer show up on the first cold night: a dirty flame sensor, a cracked igniter, a clogged condensate line. Our post on a furnace blowing cold air covers the most common ones.

Water heater searches followed their own pattern. They jumped 151% above average in February, right after the late-January cold snap, when Dulles hit 2.6°F on January 27. Colder incoming water makes a water heater work harder, and the coldest weeks are when weak units give out.

The kitchen and laundry holiday rush

Inside the house, the busiest stretch of the appliance repair calendar is November through January. Across all home appliances, repair searches ran 18% above average in December and 15% above in January, and hit their low in August.

  • Ovens and ranges peak in November (+46%) and stay high in December (+43%). Thanksgiving and holiday baking push an oven harder than any other week of the year.
  • Washers peak in December (+28%) and dishwashers in December too (+22%), when houses fill with guests.
  • Microwaves peak in January (+43%) and drop to their low in June (−42%).

For anyone hosting, the takeaway is simple. If the oven has been running hot or slow, or the dishwasher leaves water behind, the time to fix it is October, not the week of Thanksgiving. See oven and range repair and dishwasher repair.

Summer: AC, fridges and ice makers

Air conditioning has the biggest single peak on the appliance repair calendar. AC repair searches in July were 108% above average, and 70% below average in November. Searches start climbing in April, so spring is the easy time to get a cooling system checked.

Refrigerators and ice makers rise as kitchens warm up. Fridge repair searches peaked in May (+14%) and stayed above average through July. Ice maker searches peaked in May as well (+23%). A fridge whose condenser coils are coated with dust struggles first on a hot day.

The steady ones: dryers and freezers

Not everything is seasonal. Dryer and freezer repair searches stayed within 15% of their average every month of the year. A dryer breaks in June about as often as it does in December, so there is no off-season for keeping the lint screen and vent clean.

The appliance repair calendar scoreboard

Every appliance we tracked, ranked by how far its busiest month rose above its average.

What the calendar means for this fall

  • Test the heat now. Furnace and heat pump searches start rising in October. Run the heat for 15 minutes on a cool afternoon before the first cold night. A $99 heating tune-up finds most of the problems that cause a January no-heat call.
  • Check the oven before November. Bake something simple and see if it heats on time and holds temperature.
  • Fix small washer and dishwasher problems early. A slow drain or a leak in October becomes a holiday breakdown in December.

If something is already acting up, book it before the rush. See furnace repair, heat pump repair and washer repair.

How we did it

Data: monthly Google Ads search volume for 888 repair searches (appliance and system by town, brand by appliance, and general repair terms). It covers September 2025 to August 2026 in six areas: Fairfax, Prince William, Loudoun, Arlington and Fauquier counties and the city of Alexandria. We pulled it on September 30, 2026 through DataForSEO’s Google Ads search volume service.

Cleaning: We left out searches for installation, replacement and cleaning, since those aren’t breakdowns. We also dropped search-and-area pairs that never went above 20 searches a month, because Google reports tiny numbers as a flat minimum. Loudoun County is left out of the heating, cooling and water heater numbers: its searches for those terms are inflated by data-center demand in Ashburn.

Limits: A search isn’t a breakdown, since some people are researching or comparing. Google rounds search volumes, and the year we measured includes one unusually cold January. These numbers show when people look for repairs, which is a good stand-in for when things break, not a count of repairs.
