Hot-surface igniters crack with age. The furnace tries to start, then locks out.

A coated sensor can’t prove the flame, so the burners shut off seconds after lighting.
Inducer or blower motor
A failing inducer stops the start-up sequence; a failing blower means heat with no airflow.
Clogged filter and overheating
A dirty filter trips the high-limit switch, so the furnace short-cycles on and off.
Condensate problems

My refrigerator/freezer produced excessive ice causing the causing to make a strange and loud noise. I thought the fan/motor was damaged. Why won’t my furnace ignite?
On most modern furnaces, the hot-surface igniter or the flame sensor is to blame: igniters crack with age, and a dirty flame sensor shuts the burners off seconds after they light. Both are quick furnace repair jobs.
What does a blinking light on my furnace mean?
It’s an error code. The pattern is listed on a sticker inside the furnace door — note it or take a photo before you call. It helps us bring the right part.
How long do furnaces last?
With yearly maintenance, most gas furnaces last about 15 to 20 years. Past that, repairs get more frequent and a replacement often makes more sense.
Should I be worried about carbon monoxide?
Every home with a gas furnace should have working CO detectors on each level. If a detector goes off, get everyone outside and call 911 or your gas company.
How often should I change my furnace filter?
Check it monthly and change it every one to three months, depending on the filter and whether you have pets. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons a furnace overheats and shuts off.
How much does furnace repair cost?
